Levelling compounds correct uneven and rough subfloors to create a smooth base for carpet, vinyl, LVT, laminate and wood. Fast-setting and fibre-reinforced options let you walk on and cover floors sooner, while DPMs control residual moisture in concrete subfloors to protect the finished floor.

Matching the correct primer, compound and membrane to the subfloor is key to a lasting result. For guidance on which levelling system suits your subfloor type and moisture conditions, read our subfloor preparation guide or call our trade team for advice.

What to check before you order

  • Establish the subfloor first — concrete, screed, existing adhesive residue or timber all change which primer and compound you need.
  • Check moisture. Where residual moisture is above the flooring manufacturer's limit, a surface DPM is applied before levelling.
  • Coverage is quoted per bag at a stated depth; doubling the depth halves the area a bag covers.
  • Fast-setting compounds let you cover the floor sooner where the programme is tight.
  • Order primer with the compound — most compounds will not perform correctly on an unprimed absorbent subfloor.

Levelling & Screed questions

How much levelling compound will I need?
Coverage is quoted per bag at a nominal depth, for example a set area at 3mm. Multiply your floor area by the depth you need and compare it with the bag coverage on the product page, then round up to whole bags.
Do I need a DPM before levelling?
A surface damp-proof membrane is used where the subfloor's residual moisture exceeds the limit set by the floor covering manufacturer. Testing the subfloor first is the only reliable way to decide.
Can I level over an existing floor?
It depends on what is there. Sound, well-bonded adhesive residue and existing smoothing compound can often be primed and levelled over; loose, flaking or bitumen-based surfaces need removing or isolating. Our subfloor preparation guide covers the usual cases.
